What attributes and features might be desirable in the Mary’s Meadow Cohousing development?

  • Energy efficiency--Jim built a super insulated home in Pennsylvania before moving to Colorado, and is committed to the idea that if you pay a little more upfront for some things, insulation for example, you will enjoy energy savings as long as you own your home
  • Solar gain--the majority of homes will be sited for maximum solar gain. Depending on the wishes of the community an investment in solar panels, for the common house might be considered
  • Built Green--Colorado has a builders’ consortium which promotes the use of environmentally sound construction
  • Technologically advanced--high speed internet access and other features which will make it possible to telecommute from the cohousing community
  • Minimal environmental impact--once construction is finished, disturbed areas will be replanted with native grasses and flowers, obviating the necessity for lawn mowing and extensive grounds maintenance
  • Xeriscaping--in this mountainous and semiarid environment, trees and shrubs selected for sound and wind barriers will be chosen from native, low water demand species
  • Bulk purchasing of basic foods
  • Common commercial quality laundry
